An original Italian easy reader by Giovanni Galavotti

Pier Paolo Pasolini was already famous as a writer and poet when he directed his first film, Accattone. Few of the actors were professionals, they were simply kids from Rome’s slums. Each character in the film has a nickname, above all the main character ‘Accattone’ (beggar). Pasolini shows us the world of the underclass and of petty criminals. His images contrast with sacred music by the composer Bach.
This re-telling for learners of Italian makes a great introduction before watching the movie itself. Or simply an excellent supplement to your study program!

I had to read and reread this book several times before plucking up the courage to say that it is something of a disappointment. ‘Accattone’ is a grim, brutal and disturbing film which I saw decades ago as a teenager and my most ─ and to be honest only ─ vivid memory of it was the squalor and the wretchedness of the protagonists. But little of that atmosphere makes it into the book which consequently is not much more than a story of thieves, layabouts, pimps and prostitutes. It was only after I watched the film again that the book acquired more depth and nuance.
On its own, the book will teach you new words and phrases, thus fulfilling its primary objective, but it won’t introduce you to the work of Pasolini.
If I knew how, I’d give it four and a half stars. In my technological ignorance I have to settle for four.
However, if (like me) your primary reason for buying Easy Readers is to learn Italian, buy it, read it and benefit from it.

Interesting new vocabulary and phrase content and another excellent stimulus to learning more Italian .

Un libro interessante da leggere se sei un fan del cinema italiano, questo è il primo film di Pasolini. Ho imparato un sacco di nuove parole e frasi, non sono sicura quando li uso!

Accatone, as told by Giovanne Galavotti, is a wonderful and complex preview to the film as the story’s details completely describe the film’s action and mood.
After listening and reading, then watching the film on YouTube as Daniel suggested,
I listened to the EasyReader narrative again and loved the way the film’s images played in my head while I listened…like the Bach playing through the film!
It was great: without the EasyReader, I wouldn’t have “gotten” this wonderful Pasolini film. The story really captured the sense of Accatone the film and character.

Before my EasyReaders email I had never heard of Pasolini so I checked him out on Wikipedia and after about two seconds realised I had been missing out on a big chunk of Italian culture . I took a look at the film of “Accattone” and was disappointed to find I understood next to nothing, but the setting, atmosphere and main characters really left a strong impression.
Determined to understand more, I downloaded and started reading my EasyReader. It was so helpful. I found that, besides learning some interesting new vocabulary, I was also getting an impression of characters and scenes from the film.
I read the story a couple of times and then took another look at the film. I was amazed to find I had a good grasp of what was going on. The EasyReader had made the film much more accessible. It had introduced me to the characters and helped me to understand the plot.
I really enjoyed the whole cultural experience; EasyReader, EasyReader with audio, Accattone the film, and finding out about Pasolini.
