I enjoyed this brief insight into the life of Caravaggio.I used it as listening practice first then followed the text while being read to .The Italian reader has a lovely clear accent and intonation so it was easy for me to understand.I then went back and read the book focussing on aspects of vocabulary and grammar I had missed.I enjoyed learning re the life of an artist as I practised my Italian so I went onto to do some research on the artist. Many thanks for such a useful resource!

I enjoyed reading and listening to this story of an episode in Caravaggio’s wild life. It was full of interesting new vocabulary and sentence structures, audio was a good speed, and I appreciated the end-of-chapter exercises. The level seemed just right for where I am. I second another reviewer’s hope that there are more Caravaggio stories in the offing.

Great learning in this book, as well as very interesting. I jumped a bit far ahead with this one, needing the dictionary as well as the glossary. Have bought a few more at easier levels and will continue to work up gradually. Many thanks. Helen Hensley.

As a tool for learning a language I find these books excellent. Caravaggio is the first book I have bought and using mainly because he is my favourite artist. As yet I have not finished it.
However, I soon appreciated the value of the book with the written and spoken word and the little exercises at the end of the chapters.
I am dyslexic and found formal classes difficult plus the lack of memory due to age. I must say that I am convinced these books could be of great value to me in bringing the Italian language in a medium which would give me some success.
    Thank you Daniel.

I can highly recommend this ebook. Even though I’m just beginning level B1, I thoroughly enjoyed reading the story. As noted above it’s based on true events, which makes it even more interesting. It was quite a challenge for me so I read it first, relying on a dictionary, and then listened to it. I, too, had problems with the idioms so decided to read it together with my teacher. She also mentioned that the story was well written. Look forward to more ebooks of this kind.

Well written and a most enjoyable read, the pleasure of “Caravaggio nei vicoli di Roma” is further enhanced by being based on true events. Bad boy Caravaggio was certainly a handful and his volatile character is conveyed with sympathy and humour ─ so 5 stars for that.

The audio on the other hand is rather flat; a degree of voice modulation and appropriate pauses would have separated the angry, the impatient, the breathless, the shouters and the whisperers, thus making the ‘listen-only’ part of the learning process more beneficial (and more enjoyable).

Having said that… for me the text is the main event and the audio a supporting act ─ so the learning progresses, the words and phrases become increasingly familiar with each re-read and my grasp of Italian improves.

And having said that… there is just one thing I would like to see added to the glossary; an explanation of the occasional idiom ─ or at least what a novice like me takes to be an idiom because I can’t find a translation/explanation in any dictionary. For example: the phrase “un sussurro a fior di labbra”. A whisper… lips… but what is “a fior”? I would never be brave enough to parrot a phrase I don’t fully understand.

To stray from the subject of reviews; Daniel says “…Lisa wrote in wondering why more people don’t comment on the articles I write for the club.” I certainly read them, enjoy them and marvel at Daniel’s ability to find the time for writing between teaching, studying Swedish, reading, living… I believe he even likes cooking! (I hate it, so my eyes glaze over whenever and wherever the subject crops up. But I digress.) So my reason for not commenting is simply lack of time. As I’m typing this, the clock at the bottom of my screen says 12:57 AM ─ and I haven’t even started my dose of Italian lessons for the day/night……

I am using this e reader slightly differently this time. Usually I read the text first until I have a decent understanding. This time I am going for the audio first as my listening skills are not my strong point. In addition, I would say my level is B1 so this is a challenge. First pass, audio without text. Despite another reader finding the audio problematic, on the contrary I found the readers diction very clear and the speed just right. The intonation is spot on. I was able to follow more than I had expected. Second pass, audio and text together, back to the comfort zone and understanding is coming together nicely. A good deal easier than trying to follow a news item or political report, or even the local builder. I will repeat the exercise until I can feel confident with the dialogue alone. Like some other reviewers I am a fan of Caravaggio even though he was a wild man. I think this text is an excellent stepping stone to that leap into free reading. If this helps me shunt up to B2 I shall be a happy bunny

My Caravaggio arrived minutes after I ordered it which surprised me given the time difference with Australia. I’ve had a quick look and no doubt some of it will be a challenge for me but I look forward to reading it and listening too.

I found Caravaggio nei vicoli di Roma to be a good combination of history, drama, and learning. The story is interesting, and the grammar and vocabulary are advanced enough to offer me a challenge, especially when I listen without reading. Caravaggio is one of my favorite Italian painters so it was good to see a story about him offered on this website. There should be a sequel, as his life gets more interesting after his exile from Rome. I found this story quite helpful in increasing my vocabulary and understanding sentence structure and verb usage. Listening to the audio is very challenging.

I have not read the book yet as I have not managed to move it from the e-mail list to a safe place as I am afraid I would lose it completely.
However, I am very impressed with the speed and service of the company and when I get around to reading the book I am sure it will be worth the wait.
I will be in touch at a later date.

This story has really captured the character of Caravaggio with each chapter packed with interesting scenarios. Hopefully it will improve my listening skills as the story has enough action to return to repeatedly.

Caravaggio – what a “lad” and what a genius! This story of some of his escapades is delightful to read and to listen to. As an intermediate student of Italian, I found it suitable for my level overall as well as quite challenging in places – all good – and I would recommend it to others. Well worth the price too.

Another excellent story from Enrico Maso. The narration is so clear that, listening before reading the text, I could understand enough to pique my interest. It’s a fast-paced tale with plenty of action in each chapter so doesn’t feel like hard work.
