I will review Libro 2 here, after reviewing Libro 1. I have now have read all 5 in the series, But for me this the most interesting of the series because of the description of the horrible conditions aboard the ships on these long maritime journeys. It prompted me to do further research into these ship board spread of disease in the cramped conditions and the lack of pre-screening for contagious disease (neither by the masters o f the vessels, or probably being hidden by the desperate emigrants). That’s the scientific paper that Daniel sent the link to everyone in one of his weekly commentaries that he sent. Again continuing repetitive listening is the key for me. for vocabulary & context.

I like these books at level B2 and B2/C1 because the vocabulary is just challenging enough and always adds to my understanding of other books and magazines I read. Most useful, however , for me is to read the book whilst listening to the audio. Listening two or three times to the audio whilst re-reading the book gives me a faster comprehension of what the “plot” of the book is about, and often now I understand the words from the context without having to look at the glossary as much. Just as Daniel suggests in his quasi Blog.

I am enjoying this book even more than the first! I’ve not finished it yet but it seems the author has got into her stride and is writing with more confidence. I am so looking forward to seeing how the story unfolds in the next book. Having the audio track to listen to while I read really adds to the overall enjoyment of reading.

Great great books. I remember when my dad used to tell me the first time he saw the statua della Liberta’ and arrived at Ellis Island. having left a small village on the outskirt of Torino. Much easier for me,,,, i arrived in St. Mawes Cornwall and this was 54 years ago. Great place and on the very first day i met this lovely English girl in St. Mawes, and….a year later we became husband and wife. She passed away 20 years ago. Still miss you Kate, but you gave me two great children, Grazie.

Comunque, questi libri sono meravigliosi e pieni di emozioni. Grazie a chi li ha creati. Spero che tutti abbiate avuto una Buona Pasqua, Ciao ciao Elvino Alexandre Alliot

Both Libro 1 and Libro 2 are great reads. The stories are compelling and the language is delightful which definitely helps to make understanding both in Italian something of a walk in the park!
They both capture the heartbreak of leaving for the unknown. I enjoyed them.

I enjoyed this book very much! I, unfortunately, missed the opportunity to ask my grandparents about their journey in the early 1900’s to the US from Italy. This book helps me to envision what their experience might have been like. The book tells a very compelling story about the hardships and dangers of traveling by boat at that time. This second book in the series continues the story of a family with 3 young children on their journey to the US. I can’t wait for the next book in the series, as the book ends with somewhat of a cliffhanger!
