An original Italian easy reader by Francesca Colombo

The third in a series of five ‘easy reader’ ebooks which tells the story of three generations of an Italian family who emigrate to the USA.

Libro 3 is narrated by Antonio, one of the twins. He came to New York from Italy when he was just as a child, but is now a young man, a merchant sailor, and hoping to start of a family of his own.

“Forza, maledetti italiani!

Rosalba mi dice all’orecchio: “Andiamo via, Antonio, domani ci sarà un’occasione migliore.”

Description

An original Italian easy reader by Francesca Colombo

The third in a series of five ‘easy reader’ ebooks which tells the story of three generations of an Italian family who emigrate to the USA.

Libro 3 is narrated by Antonio, one of the twins. He came to New York from Italy when he was just as a child, but is now a young man, a merchant sailor, and hoping to start of a family of his own.

“Forza, maledetti italiani!

Now reviewing Libro 3. Almost have similar comments to others that this book is a little unconnected to Libro 2. Yes the characters are the same but the description of the prejudices that the new immigrants face totally reflect on modern times and reinforces the saying “that those who don’t know and understand history will be forced to repeat history”. so true
Can’t help reinforcing Daniel’s advice to listen again & a gain to gain comprehension and vocabulary.
Little more difficult at B2/C1 but Ok
Gives a good picture of what life must have been like and challenges to overcome.

Great series- get them all- it’s a great read!

I must say that I was disappointed that the 3rd book in the series does not continue the story where the 2nd book ended, especially since I considered the ending to be a cliffhanger. I was very interested to learn what happened to the father and how the family starts their new life in America, but that part of the story is completely skipped over and starts with the children now grown. About midway through the book, the son briefly informs the reader regarding what happened to the father. Though enjoyable, the story is not as compelling as the first two books in the series.

I have to say I enjoyed book 2 more than book 1 and now I’m enjoying book 3 even more than book 2! I feel as though the author is going from strength to strength and I’m steadily expanding my vocab. Plus I really value the exercises at the end of each chapter as they make the learning process more interactive.

Forget the question “What work?” for Mariella…..I’m not meant to know at this point…..I feel stupid!
I’ve started book 4 so maybe I will find out soon.

I’m really enjoying this series. Thankyou.
One question… about Rosalba who has gone to work for Mariella….who had a baby out of wedlock…..what work? Non ho capito.

The information is there, Fiona, if you look. But talked about carefully by those concerned, and otherwise kept a secret (not from the reader…)

Remember Libro 1? We first met Mariella on the ship, when she was helping a stranger give birth below decks. But Mariella, we learn later, can’t tolerate men herself, hence her fondness for the kids in this family, and partnering up with Rosalba, having no daughter of her own.

I like the idea that the books in this series are narrated by different family members. In this one from the viewpoint of the quiet twin I find that no magical opportunities have opened up in America and that the father was not even able to settle his young family before he died. I hope the writer has better news for the reader in the next book! You don’t have to be an Italian American to be interested in these books, even though events might be especially interesting to this group. The movement of people around the world continues. The challenges are still enormous.
