Il bar (B2/C1)

  1. Felice

An engaging tale of a bar owner, his eccentric customers, and exorcising the ghosts of the past! As with all these books, repeated listening to the audio adds to better understanding (especially if you can bear to listen without following the ebook).

Leggendo questa bellissima descrizione di una giornata particolare nella vita di Mario, mi sentiva come se stessi sedendo su ono sgabello nel suo bar. E inoltre, il lettore è privilegiato, perché può anche leggere i pensieri di Mario e quindi sentire le sue emozioni, che raggiungono un crescendo alle fine della storia. Che giornata! Carpe diem Mario. Carpe diem!

This is the story of a relationship that draws the reader in by arousing interest in the sympathetic central character Mario: his past, a decision he regrets, his life and emotions now. The setting, the bar he owns and runs, contributes an appealing sense of everyday life in an Italian city. Story and situation stir the reader’s interest and motivate us to read on: we want to know how, or if, things will develop. The syntax is not complicated – generally short sentences interspersed with dialogue – but the text is written in such a way as to include a broad grammatical range, for example a variety of tenses, and the vocabulary is highly accessible while offering a challenge. Stories such as ‘Il bar’ are a very good way of promoting independent reading.

I really like the story, I like the way the story is told, in a very natural way. I listen to the story while ironing, later I read the story and try to memorise some difficult words. And look for some usefull expressions for my own conversations. I like to listen to the story a couple of times, to ‘brainwash’ myself.

I love reading snapshots of daily life in Italy. For me, when Mario opened the creaky door to the bar, he led me into his day, as it unfolded in seemingly real time. The pace of the everyday conversations, juxtaposed with Mario’s thoughts and the mystery of the first of March made the story fast paced and intriguing. I’d really like to know what happens next! Part 2?!

Una storia divertente con esercizi utili. Grazie!

A delightful little story, though the end was not a great surprise. Well worth reading and re-reading.

Another excellent Easyreader. It is particularly good at informal Italian conversation. The story holds your interest and the characters are simpatici. Very good value for money once more. Perhaps slightly easier than the other Easyreaders at B2/C1 but still definitely not for beginners, and there is some stretching informal vocabulary. Above all, great fun to follow. The general structure of the Easyreaders makes it very easy to try to get the general gist from listening then to check in detail against the text.

Enjoyed the story but was looking for Chapter 9! Was surprised when it ended. What happened next? After a couple of chapters stopped looking up words in the dictionary and just enjoyed the story. Found the level fine, which is a good indicator for future purchases!

This story is a good exercise in grammar and vocabulary. I didn’t care for the story as much as I have others I’ve purchased from this website that have to do with history, famous people, or places in Italy, but it was enjoyable enough. Some of the vocabulary was challenging in that words I had to look up on wordreference.com or in my dictionary didn’t seem to really make sense in the text of the story. So it was interesting to try and figure out the meanings or to look at the words in a different context, idiomatic maybe. I think the B2/C1 rating is appropriate.

I ordered this book after reading the sample first page and noticing several ‘reflexive’ constructions which I had found so different from English. I have just started reading it and listening to it at the same time. I am finding it enjoyable to read but as my level is I think B1 the listening usually needs the written word. Thank you Daniel for providing an interesting and varied site. Best wishes Jackie.

A really enjoyable read. This book is above my level but I was able to follow and generally understand the text. Such a lovely story. I’ve picked out some useful phrases from the text that I want to practise so that I can use them myself in conversation.
I find the exercises after each chapter really helpful too, they ensure that I have understood what I’ve just read. Would definitely recommend this book.

I suoi amici erano qui.

This is a really excellent book for someone just moving beyond the intermediate standard. Some good new vocabulary introduced and great to see the grammar in action. Would highly recommend
