I started to read this book and was at first puzzled, thinking I was misunderstanding some phrases such as “Fantozzi si alza in volo” e “deve fare il viaggio di ritorno attaccato sotto il treno” Until I realised that they were quite literal. This film takes slap stick to a level I would not have thought possible. It is so bonkers that you cannot help but laugh. There is plenty of useful vocabulary but once I had watched the film and all its craziness on YouTube, much of this script became memorable. There is nothing like a visual combined with a phrase . “In piscina Fantozzi si lancia subito in acqua: ma l’acqua non c’è.” I would definitely recommend this book to add some aide memoire to your learning. Works for me. Suspend credibility and sophisticated humour . There are plenty of sentence constructions to keep you on the straight and narrow of learning. Break out and go a little mad. I especially like the chapter of the attempts to christen a ship launch with champagne

  2. Rita Seru-Gardner

Il secondo tragico Fantozzi recounted the most important and funniest scenes from the life of a poor, downtrodden accountant in the era of Big Business. The background information and glossary enabled me to understand and enjoy one of Italy’s most popular tragicomic films.

  3. Bianca Danieli (verified owner)

I really enjoyed this book, and the story of Fantozzi really appeals to my sense of humour! I thought the book was well written and condensed accordingly.
I watched the movie before reading he book, which I found very helpful. I would definitely recommend this book.

i am lower/middle intermediate, and found the book a little hard to get my head around, but possibly it was just my level, lots of new words to learn which is good, and I enjoy listening to soundcloud and reading at the same time which is certainly an advantage with Daniel’s e books

  5. Patricia Lenz

Probably because my dislike of the character Fantozzi, the story is not engaging. While there is lots of new vocabulary and usage, the convoluted story structure describing Fantozzi’s antics and attitudes is distasteful…a turnoff. I was not interested in him or the outcome, which made it hard to concentrate.
Since I am conditioned to like Italian texts and anticipate new material, I suggest it is worth it to get the book to experience how distaste for the material negatively affects learning!

      Wow, Patricia!

After all these years, for you to leave such a negative review, are you OK? You’re the oldest and best customer we have. This is unexpected. And I’m very sorry.

Fantozzi is a fiction, an irony, a representation of the Italian everyman. Remember, this is part of our ‘Book of the Movie’ series? Movies have characters that are not necessarily likeable. And structures that can seem incoherent if you haven’t seen the film.

Fantozzi is a fool, that’s the point. He makes dumb decisions such as chasing after a female colleague when he already has a loving wife. He tolerates his colleagues referring to his daughter as a monkey. It’s the fact that life mistreats him that resonates so with Italians. The cruel bosses, the meaningless job, the desire for love, the absurdities of everyday existence, the stupidity of it all.

There’s a lot to learn from Fantozzi. Ask any Italian over 40 years of age.

      A più presto,

      Daniel

        Ciao, Daniel!

I certainly did not mean for my review to provoke such a reaction. I submit here an amendment to my comments!

This is a revision/addition to what I said:

I am definitely not negative on the value of the Book of the Film Il secondo tragico Fantozzi ; it is an excellent and challenging language exercise, as usual! It is not my intention to reject its language lesson. It is a welcome addition to my online library. To all language learners: Buy it, buy it, buy it!!!

Of course I learned from it, even though for me, the content was an odious stumbling block.

All cannot be as pleasant to absorb as the many Easy Readers I have read and enjoyed. I am not a fan of slapstick “life mistreats” humor in general. Movies—like, for example, those of Jerry Lewis make me cringe. Laurel & Hardy are, in my opinion, in a different class.

I have seen only short clips of the film. And, you are right, I don’t get it!

If I now know something more about stupid fools making dumb decisions, so be it.

Having carefully studied Giovanni’s text, I am eager to see the film; I hope to find it in Bologna. If it enlightens me, I will jump for joy and possibly even lighten up on my attitude towards the genre. I know that the book will be a fantastic guide to what I would be seeing—that’s the idea, isn’t it?

Thanks! For everything you do for us language learners!
        Patrizia
