An original Italian easy reader by Francesca Colombo

Nel 1500 nasce in Italia un nuovo modo di fare teatro. Si tratta della “Commedia dell’arte”, un tipo di teatro popolare che prende vita nelle piazze.

Lucrezia is a young prostitute, whose real passion is show business! And because a troupe of players is in town, the local priest is going to have to wait a little longer to see her. Instead of working this afternoon, she’ll get dressed and go down to the piazza to see the show (for the third time!)

Description

Lucrezia is a young prostitute, whose real passion is show business! And because a troupe of players is in town, the local priest is going to have to wait a little longer to see her. Instead of working this afternoon, she’ll get dressed and go down to the piazza to see the show (for the third time!)

Very interesting book, I am still reading it but almost finished. It is a challenge, as it is the highest level I have tried as yet, but it is an enjoyable challenge. If you are looking at it don’t let the level put you off.
    Many thanks Helen

A great little story. Fun characters and informative about commedia acting. Great sense of place and time. Plenty of colour! Language level is quite tough for me, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Would whole-heartedly recommend.

Another excellent Easyreader at an advanced level of Italian. I think C1 is right; there is vocabulary which is new to me and use of the passato remoto. This tense is difficult to learn but relatively easy to recognise, which is all that is needed here.
What I like about this book, as with others in the series, is that it does not neglect the quality of the writing or plot because its main purpose is to teach language. It is superbly written and the story is very engaging. It is great to learn a language through high-quality writing rather than over-simple material. That is why I look forward to reading more Easyreaders.

As a follower of “Upstart Crow” I was already primed to enjoy this story, though it took me a while to get round to it as it’s been such a busy year. As always, the story is well written and each chapter leads you on to the next. Once I started, I couldn’t wait to finish it. The text was a little more challenging than previous easy readers that I’ve bought, but that’s good too. I’m looking forward to re-reading it again at a slower pace, with pauses for the exercises that I have still to do.

I’ll be honest, this one was a challenge for me. I’m at about B2 but usually read at a slightly higher level. I’ve read a few “real” books in Italian without too much difficulty and have enjoyed other Easy Readers at C1 and C2. With this one, I couldn’t really follow the audio, so ended up reading the text. I managed to follow the gist without looking things up but there were a lot of new words (which is good) and I think some of the language is a bit archaic (which would be realistic, although I may be wrong on this.) I thought the book was really interesting though – and it’s a true story! The characters are engaging and I could picture the action. I will probably read it again to focus on vocabulary and have been inspired to find out more about commedia dell’arte.

This is interesting and enjoyable read for anyone, but especially for someone who enjoys historically-based fiction. I was able to picture the characters and scenes which is very important with any story that you want to read both for pleasure and as a learning tool. I look forward to reading it many more times, as well as listening to the text on Soundcloud. It’s an excellent way to absorb new vocabulary and sentence structures.

Many thanks for being the first to leave a review, Margaret. We appreciate it. I enjoyed the story too and so was disappointed not to have had feedback from our readers.
      Buon anno
