I enjoyed reading this book and although it’s a lower level than I usually choose, there were words I was not familiar with. The vocabulary lists at the end of each chapter are useful. I wanted to read it as I’d heard of the film many years ago.
I have bought another Easy Reader, B2/C1 this time, and I am going to do what I did with Ladri and not look up any words but enjoy the story! Taking Daniel’s good advice. Try it, it works.

Mille grazie, Anne! Did you try watching the film, by the way?

The book, Bicycle Thieves is based on a very famous film. After World War 2, there was great poverty in Italy. Antonio’s bicycle gives him the possibility of earning money, but it is stolen. He is desperate and steals someone else’s. This book is not too difficult to read and has a good glossary of new words for each chapter. The questions at the end of each chapter are too simple, but this book is suitable for level 1B students.

The story “The Bicycle Thieves” is very sad but realistic for the time in Italy when everyone was suffering after the war. It was quite easy to read and translate, with no difficult grammar and some new words to learn.

Very easy to understand but very short! I saw the movie too and it’s the same. I liked the audio too, so I really enjoyed the text while I was listening.

  5. Rosemary Wells

I thoroughly enjoyed this book even though the story was rather sad. The girl reading the story speaks really clearly and with more empathy for the characters than some of the readers of your other books. My only complaint is that the chapters were very short which meant I finished the book quickly!!

This is such moving and very sad story. I watched the film for the second time after reading the book and, although the film is embellished, I liked the book better. I could understand most of the book and found myself not needing to translate nearly as much towards the end of the book as in the beginning thanks to the fact many of the words are repeated, such as urla, dappertutto and barbone. That made is more enjoyable for me.

I enjoyed this easy reader eventhough I was not familiar with the film. I found the film on youtube but I have not watched it yet. I read the book first. I found the vocabulary to be useful and the storyline was captivating. I also found that this is my level as I thoght Il Ristorante was very easy. I think it is really valuable to be able to listen to the Italian since this is where I need the most practice. I am looking forward to reading the other books I purchased.

Here is another little gem. Watch the film also and then the text, the audio and grammar processes will be so much more meaningful. If you get the confidence then try the film without the subtitles (maybe keeping this text on your lap, works for me)

  9. Christine Chudley

This book will tell you the storyline of one of the most important films in the history of Italian film making and is incredibly moving. I saw the film with subtitles on the internet and jumped at the chance to read the book in clear and simple Italian to back it up. Look out for the very last line! Yes, really, that’s where it finishes.

  10. Linda Cooper

I’ve been studying Italian for 2 1/2 years and I found this book easy enough to read but with a few challenges and definitely some new vocabulary. The storyline is interesting for a reader of any age. I think the books published by the online Italian club are very well-written and my Italian instructor, a native speaker, agrees.

This is a cracker and apart from being an opportunity to try out your italian it is a great story and an insight into immediate postwar Italy. I have only just finished my first year of Italian but still managed to enjoy it. After you’ve read it you can watch the film on YouTube to really get the grittiness and check if you got the idea.

Wonderfull story!. You can imagine it, while reading. I have studied Italian for a year now and could understand most of it.
