An original Italian easy reader by Francesca Colombo

Verdi is going through a difficult time. He’s recently widowed, both of his children have died, and his second opera was a disaster: the public hated it! So he’s ready to quit Milan and move back home to help his father on the farm.

There’s just one snag – he’s contracted to write another show…

I very much enjoyed this story about the life of Giuseppe Verdi, who is one of my favourite composers. I love the chorus of the Hebrew Slaves which is also called Va’ (or Vai) Pensiero.
Although I knew some stories of his life, there were some details that helped me to understand why he composed certain operas. He had a very sad life having lost his two young children and his young wife early on in his life but later found a kindred spirit in a soprano Giuseppina. Sadly she also died before her husband.
One of my friends who is a musician pointed out that a “spinetta” is not a small piano. In a spinet, the strings are plucked while in a piano they are struck by the hammers.
