It is alwasys good to read and hear a variety of texts, and since at the moment through the EasyItalianNews I am immersed in landslides, shootings and football, it is good to step back into history and the alleys of C17 Venice, and become absorbed in different concerns and vocabulary. The descriptions and speech are varied and interesting, the reading is clear and not rushed (I must be improving!), and the exercises varied. I found the storyline rather thin, hence the dropped star. B
    ut definitely, to be recommended.

I libri di Enrico Maso sono sempre piene di umanità e buon umore. Inoltre, danno allo studente abbastanza fiducia per iniziare una recensione in italiano ─ ma, almeno per me ─ non ancora abbastanza per continuare. Forse la prossima volta…

Maso’s historical settings (Caravaggio, Galileo, Michelangelo) allow for words, and even entire circumstances encountered in his previous books, to be woven into the story and so get reinforced; the walks thorough alleys, the churches, the hawkers and river banks quickly become permanently embedded in the reader’s memory. And of course there are always new words to discover and learn. ‘Vivaldi e la chiesa della Salute’ is entertainment and education in one enjoyable package. Facciamo un brindisi per Enrico!

Vivaldi e la chiesa della Salute worked for me on several levels. It’s an interesting story. The Italian grammar and vocabulary were challenging, and the audio reading proved helpful in hearing the combination of sounds and words. The reading is fast, but that’s the way people talk, so listening multiple times helped condition my ear to understand how the words flow into one another. I agree with the B2 rating. I liked the historical aspects of the story. I felt like I was learning a bit of history as well as the language. I appreciated the dialogue in the story. Dialogue seems more difficult to understand sometimes than just narrative prose, so this story is good practice for that skill. And, now I want to know what i biacoli tastes like.

This was an excellent product, and exceptionally good value. The difficulty rating of B2 was correct and I found that there was enough new skill needed to be challenging whilst it the general standard was accessible. My level is that I can read simple Italian and have a good grasp of grammar, whilst understanding the spoken language if it is not spoken too quickly and does not have too many slang or informal terms. This was just right. The story is well structured and maintained my interest throughout, and I find it useful to replay the audio occasionally to increase familiarity with spoken Italian. There was some new vocabulary, but of course there needs to be for my skills to develop.
