Parallel Texts – How To View The Chapters Side-By-Side!

Viewing the chapters of your parallel text ebook side by side (so as to compare the different languages) is not hard, but probably won’t happen automatically.

There are a few simple, free things you’ll need to do first.

The file is a .pdf so will open with whatever the default .pdf reader on your device is.

These can vary and will probably NOT show the chapters side-by-side, as intended.

For this reason, we recommend the free Adobe Reader, which is installed on many computers in any case.

If you don’t have it, download it here (though I’d suggest un-checking the ‘Optional Offers’…)

Once you have Adobe Reader installed, this is what you do:

  1. Download the file
  2. Don’t just click on it or it will open in a browser, which probably works differently
  3. Instead, view it in your device’s downloads file
  4. Open with Adobe Reader (right click on the file, choose ‘Open with’, select Adobe Reader)
  5. In Adobe Reader…
  6. Look in the menu (at the top) for ‘View’, then choose ‘Page display’
  7. Choose ‘two page view’ (for the parallel text) or ‘single page view’ for normal documents
  8. Use ‘View’ / ‘Read mode’ to make the text larger or smaller so that it fits your screen
  9. Use the ‘zoom’ and ‘page up/down’ buttons to navigate through the book

I teach English as a second language in Spain and am learning Spanish. These books are great for me and my students. I also used it to prompt discussion, e.g. “what do you think is going to happen next?”

This story is good but it doesn’t test the student as much as El Restaurante does – with the exercises to do after each chapter. However, it is useful for the advanced student who might still stumble upon a few words.

Not a lot of point in exercises when there’s a translation of every line of the text… But the level is A1, so it’s for elementary (not advanced) learners…

  3. Tony

    Excellent ! Really helpful.

  4. Gina Pumphrey (verified owner)

This is a simple story to use with English Learners. Having the translation already available is a great time-saver when trying to teach an older student to read/understand in English. This is a great resource; I’m looking forward to finding and using additional titles.

Cute story, which really helped to refresh the Spanish I already knew, and also taught me new sentence structures. Highly recommended!

This was a very good book for me to read. I’ve just started to learn Spanish and I found the Spanish mostly easy to comprehend. I liked that I could either skip the English translation or to read it if I had difficulty with the Spanish. This is a good book to help increase your comprehension and your vocabulary.

  7. Linda

Great practice and an interesting story!

This is the perfect book for beginners. All you need is a little background in Spanish to use it, and unknown words can be figured out by comparing the English to the Spanish. You can also test your knowledge by translating the English into Spanish or the Spanish into English, then look at the language you translated into to see if you got it right – even doing it word by word if you cover up the words you are translating into.

It’s very good if you’re just starting. You realise you know more than you think.

  10. Usha (verified owner)

Good level for advanced beginner learning spanish. The use of mostly present tense in the story telling did not make the story too challenging for this level. Enjoyed the suspense in the story.

  11. Clare Jones (verified owner)

A fun read which made the learning process easy and enjoyable.

  12. Frank Wildensee (verified owner)

    Great story for advanced beginners.

  13. Peter Wood (verified owner)

I was able to enjoy the Spanish, aided by the parallel text in English.
My level is rusty A level, but other levels could enjoy it too.

That’s good enough! I’m a tutor, and this book helps me to teach my students both Spanish and English.

    perfect for beginners

  16. Dave Wilson (verified owner)

Just the right level for my beginners Spanish.

  17. Lynne Neale (verified owner)

Excellent resource. Our Spanish intermediate class has been informally meeting during the summer to practice together. This has been an excellent tool for us. Thank you

  18. Valerie Guarino

Great story ! I would like to print the story without the questions so I can scaffold for learner level. Enjoyable story!

  19. Carol (verified owner)

This was a good story which kept my interest until the end. The English text would help beginners to follow the story in Spanish. I intend to go back and try to translate from the English into Spanish – this will be a challenge which will make it suitable for those at a higher level.
