Description

An original Italian easy reader by Francesca Colombo

Anselmo, once known as Rome’s go-to man for unsolvable probems (see the two previous volumes in this trilogy: Anselmo e l’omicidio di Giovanni Borgia and Anselmo e la moglie spagnola), has made a new life with his twin brother Paolo in Belgium, far to the north of the intrigues and dangers of the Papal court.

Life is good and both Anselmo and Paolo are successful men. But they can’t help following the news and gossip from Rome: Cesare Borgia has had notable military success at the head of the French armies so it now seems that his father, Pope Alessandro VI, is in an unassailable position of power and wealth.

Then one day a letter arrives: Cesare’s syphilis has reoccurred and he once more needs Anselmo’s help.

Paolo, Anselmo’s identical twin, is concerned. But then an idea occurs – accompanying his brother to Rome would be an unmissable chance to see court life at first hand!

(Volume 1 of the Anselmo trilogy is ‘Anselmo e l’omicidio di Giovanni Borgia‘, volume 2 is Anselmo e la moglie spagnola). This is Volume 3.)

I have read all three of these books. I reviewed the first one but I’m skipping to the last one at this time. I greatly enjoyed the trilogy. I was very involved in the plot, which of course involved the history of the notorious Borgia family. The main protagonist, Anselmo, is a very appealing character. He and his twin brother Paolo entice the reader to engage in their Sherlock Holmes type escapades. For the most part, the vocabulary was challenging but quite doable. The use of the passato remoto gives the reader excellent practice in a tense that is seldom heard today but often used in literature. There was a great do you have a variety in the exercises, but as I have read other reviews on the website I would like to see included comprehension questions that serve as a check for understanding.

P.S. I would love to read another book starring these fictitious twin brother detectives (well at least one of them —spoiler).

I have found these Anselmo readers extremely interesting. The story outlining the adventures of the Borgias is fascinating. My intermediate Italian class is using the readers for our lessons. The vocabulary and sentence structure is challenging for us, but we need to extend ourselves to improve. The exercises after each chapter are useful too. My Italian teacher said it is very difficult to write interesting material at so many different levels and we all congratulate your writers and thank them for their hard work. We will continue using other readers in future. Thank you for providing these wonderful resources.

I am still working my way through the new vocabulary in this story and have only read the whole story once through at a “get the gist” level. I’ve now gone back to re-read and listen to each chapter more closely. Like the previous reviewer I think it will reward concentration and focus. A vocabulary and passato remoto workout but also enjoyable as a story.

Anselmo e l’omicidio di Giovanni Borgia’, ‘Anselmo e la moglie spagnola’ & ‘Anselmo e l’avvelenamento del Papà’
Definitely, these are worth having in a learning Italian reading/listening library. After reading the text with and without narration at least three times, I thought I understood most of the dense historical vocabulary and details in the complex storyline…but with each re-reading new phrases and expressions pop up! The glossaries, in Italian, were a learning experience in themselves, because unlike definitions in English, I needed to research two unfamiliar parts. The ‘Anselmo’ trilogy wants intense concentration. No dishwashing or opening cans of cat food while listening!

Because I wanted a contrast to the laborious ‘Anselmo’ experience, I re-read another C2 Easy Reader, ‘La Via Francigena’. It was also challenging, but to me, the contemporary trekking/pilgrimage story was approachable, friendly. I loved googling places mentioned in the narrative; that opened the story to possibilities for exploring Italy. The trilogy was harder work & a different type of story, of course.
I would lobby for getting all four! The listening and reading combination is a great learning Italian resource.
