Follow Il Guercio, the diminutive one-eyed Sardinian jockey, as he’s hired to ride one of the year’s best horses, bareback, in Italy’s most famous urban race, the Siena Palio!

Forse qualche suggerimento per libri in italiano originale, tipo ‘book of the month’?

I found this quite challenging and had to re-read parts as I couldn’t work out what was going on. But I enjoyed learning about the Palio and the story was surprising. I too found that the glossaries weren’t always that helpful.

I really enjoyed the story and am enjoying continuing to work on the language. But, am I alone in finding the glossary – in this and other e-books – often explains words I can easily work out but excludes some tantalising terms? I do use good online dictionaries but try to avoid over-use.
I thought the themes and characterisation made it a really meaningful read, slightly above my everyday level but more interesting because of that.
More at this level, please.
Thanks for leaving a review. And yes, you’re right, the glossaries are rubbish (in my opinion). It seems that it’s much more difficult for the writers, editor etc. to know what you and I may or may not understand than you would expect. We have ebooks written by lots of different writers and none of them seems any good at glossaries. But that’s not really what I pay them for – for me, the important thing is that the story itself is engaging and reasonably original, so I attempt to be tolerant of other aspects that don’t totally satisfy me. One day… maybe when I retire… I’m going to go through the whole collection of ebooks and fix them myself!

This book exceeded my expectations. It is a cut above other novellas created for “language learners”. Before I bought it I was not entirely confident that it would be at a real C2 level. But it was!
The little exercises at the end of each chapter provided good reinforcement of vocabulary – and in one chapter, of those pesky prepositions. The exercises are well targeted – they not too long – and they really were useful for me.
The story is interesting and is written in a very natural style. If not for the cover and the exercises, I would have thought that it was off the shelves of an Italian bookshop.
I certainly recommend it for C1 or C2 students

This is a very intriguing story, well written and entertaining. It was probably a level beyond where I am at, but I could still follow and enjoy it. I only bothered to look up some of the words that I didn’t know if I felt it was absolutely necessary. The flow of the book was such that it carried me along with it. Well done to the writer and the speaker!

I hope this says it is a good read with a few surprises, well written but with a few linguistic challenges. It has introduced me to new words ,expressions and useful sentence constructions.
My thanks to the author.

There are a lot of new words in the book that are not used often in normal daily speech but the book Is very useful if you are studying for higher level Italian.
